How a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) Operates
An RAS functions as a miniature, self-contained ecosystem. Water from the fish tanks passes through a series of specialized treatment components that perform five critical functions:
Solids Removal: Eliminates uneaten feed, feces, and other solid waste.
Biofiltration: Converts toxic ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate.
Aeration & Oxygenation: Maintains optimal dissolved oxygen for healthy fish growth.
Temperature Control: Ensures stable water temperatures tailored to the species.
Disinfection: Removes harmful bacteria and pathogens to prevent disease.
Once treated, clean water is returned to the fish tanks, repeating the cycle. This continuous process allows RAS to reuse over 90% of water, making it a highly sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for modern aquaculture.
